A pregnant woman who died in Colorado last week has suspected her husband, who was arrested in connection with his death, may have deceived her in the past few weeks, according to a woman's best friend.

Nickole Atkinson told ABC News that the marriage of her friend Shanann Watts with Chris Watts was strained when she and their two daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, were missing on August 13. Two days later, Chris Watts was arrested. Local news agencies and family members reported that he claimed to have killed his wife and children.

"He's not the type of Chris who loves him," Atkinson said in an interview published on ABC "Good Morning America" on Monday. "He doesn't touch or hug or do things like that."

Despite sending a positive message about her husband on Facebook, Shanann Watts has "comforted the idea" that her husband cheated on him recently, Atkinson said.

Atkinson was the last best friend to see Shanann Watts, 34, before police recovered his body, along with the bodies of two of his children, a few days later on Anadarko Petroleum's property, where Chris Watts had worked. The body was found in an oil tank, while the body of his mother was found in a near shallow grave, according to court documents obtained by CBS News.

Atkinson had dropped Watt at his home in Frederick, Colorado, around 2pm Monday after a business trip, he told ABC News.

"He went inside, turned and waved my hand, and closed the door," Atkinson said. But he was worried about hours later when his friend did not answer his message and when he missed the appointment of a doctor.

"He will be able to hear the baby's heartbeat and see how things are going," Atkinson said. Shanann Watts has shared on Facebook that she hopes her third child is her husband's son.

Atkinson was not the only friend of Shanann Watts who allegedly expressed his fear of her husband's fraud. "He realized he might cheat," Amanda Thayer told CBS News on Friday.

Chris Watts told police on August 13 that he did not know where his family members were missing.

"My children are my life. That smile lights my life," Chris Watts told the local ABC news station 7 days later. "I just want them to come back. If they are not safe now, that's what breaks me. Because if they are safe, they will come back. But if they don't, it must stop. Like, someone has to come forward."

On August 15, police arrested Chris Watts. Family member Shanann Watts said they were told that he had confessed that he killed his wife and children, and agreed to show investigators where he had thrown away their bodies.

The police did not comment on potential motives. Chris Watts was arrested in Colorado county jail. Official charges are expected to be filed against him Monday.
