Green slime melts into Florida's main election

Usually, politics and slime run smoothly. "Balancing" political opponents is an outdated tradition. But in this midterm election season in South Florida, the slime itself guides people to the polling stations.
Melting green slime from Lake Okeechobee contaminates Florida's drainage flowing east and west of the lake and finally south to the bay and the ocean. This disaster has caused a dramatic decline in the economy.

This topic is a conversation here. The campaign will be very heavy for the environment. Television commercials that focus on algae and billboards are now walking down the street. Some voters say they are sufficient and they want their voices to be heard in a big way.

Looks like guacamole, smells like eggs
Chris Wittman is in the water every day. He has lived in Florida all his life and has never seen his backyard contaminated. He lives and works near Cape Coral, Florida, south of Fort Myers.

He has seen a large decrease in the number of boats on the water. "People come here and live in Florida to recreate water, fish and bots and ski and swim and this reaches them," said Wittman.
Green algae and dead fish destroy them. He describes it as "offensive."

Algae are the brightest green you can imagine, their consistency is the same as guacamole and smells like rotten eggs and meat.

The aroma is very strong which can cause stinging eyes. It's toxic to the touch and dangerous to breathe. His life is dead, seaweed depends on the life of the dead sea, as well as waterfowl that uses waterways. People also suffer, because they try to live and work around toxic water.
"I think we are at a level that is not satisfied not only ecologically but also economically," said Wittman, founder of the Captains for Clean Water, a non-profit organization that urges Congress to fix the Florida water problem.
"This is not a Florida person who moved here because there are people who defend their lives to move to Florida, retire ... enjoy our natural resources and this is what they serve.
"There are thousands of small businesses that make up the biggest economic drive in the state of Florida and tourism - they are constantly being affected by the poor quality of our water."

The fisheries, boating and tourism industry in Florida provides 1.3 million jobs and contributes $ 109 billion to state revenues.
"If we don't improve these things, it can affect our industry forever," Wittman said. This year has been two blows with terrible ups and downs at the same time. This happened simultaneously and has made the situation in Southwest Florida almost catastrophic.
"We are about to dismantle the ecological collapse, I think it will move my business to other countries where we will not be affected by this and that is just stress," said Nick Fischer, 33, second generation arrest captain at Cape Coral.
He saw difficult times, but not like this.
"I have a day where I go to take the charter and tears almost reach your eyes about what you see happening to our ecosystem," he said.
